Carrying a full-sized e-reader often feels like a commitment, especially when all you want is to catch up on a few chapters during a brief daily commute. Chinese hardware maker Xteink is addressing that exact friction with the S4, a pocket-sized reading device measuring just 6.98mm thin and weighing a light 95 grams. Priced around $50 (360 Yuan) during its initial rollout in China, the handheld device tackles the biggest shortcomings of ultra-compact e-readers by offering open software, built-in lighting, and modular magnetic mounting.
Unlike many compact digital readers that restrict users to proprietary book formats or closed firmware, the Xteink S4 shifts to an open Android 11 operating system. That single platform shift expands its utility beyond basic text viewing, allowing readers to install their preferred reading applications directly onto the device.
Breaking Free from Closed Reading Platforms
The most significant architectural change in the S4 is its software foundation. Previous iterations relied on minimal Linux-based operating systems that restricted file transfers and reader customizability. By running Android 11, the S4 enables native support for sideloading third-party applications like Kindle, Kobo, and KOReader.
Under the hood, the device pairs 2GB of RAM with 32GB of internal storage. While those memory specifications would bottleneck a standard modern smartphone, they offer plenty of headroom for indexing large EPUB libraries, handling offline article caches, and navigating e-ink rendering profiles. Wireless file transfers and library sync are handled over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, alongside a standard USB-C port for wired connections and fast charging.
Ergonomic Refinements and Modular Mounting
Hardware design on the S4 directly targets daily usability flaws seen in earlier micro-readers. The front face houses a 4.3-inch E Ink touchscreen displaying text at 220 PPI density. To solve night-reading constraints, Xteink added an adjustable front-light system featuring dual cool and warm color temperatures. Physical navigation also gets an upgrade: dedicated side page-turn buttons remain present, paired with a central capacitive home button below the panel for quick app swapping.
On the rear panel, integrated backplate magnets provide native MagSafe compatibility. This allows readers to snap the lightweight 95g device onto magnetic phone wallets, desk stands, or the back of an existing smartphone. Battery capacity has also been expanded to 1,400mAh, addressing the short battery life that frequently plagued ultra-slim pocket readers.
Current Pricing and International Availability
At present, the Xteink S4 is officially available only in the Chinese market at a introductory price equivalent to roughly $50. It remains unconfirmed whether this figure reflects a temporary promotional discount or a permanent retail price point.
An official global launch timeline has not yet been announced by Xteink. Overseas buyers interested in importing the pocket reader will likely need to rely on third-party import platforms until international distribution channels are established.
