Ugreen AP16 portable monitor with 16-inch IPS display and 165Hz refresh rate

The Ugreen AP16 portable monitor arrives claiming flagship-level specs in a slim, travel-friendly package. That matters because portable displays have mostly been basic second screens—this one aims higher with a 16-inch 2560 x 1600 panel and 165Hz refresh rate.

  • 16-inch IPS panel with 2560 x 1600 resolution and 16:10 aspect ratio
  • 165Hz refresh rate and 500 nits brightness—rare for portable monitors
  • Metal unibody design just 6.5mm thick and weighing 928 grams
  • Dual USB-C with pass-through charging plus Mini HDMI
  • Priced around $270 in China but nearly $490 imported

Flagship Power, Mid-range Compromises

On paper, the AP16 looks impressive: a 16-inch IPS panel made by BOE, with a 2560 x 1600 resolution giving it a taller 16:10 aspect ratio. That extra vertical space is useful for work tasks, like editing documents or coding. The 165Hz refresh rate is another standout feature, promising smoother motion—especially for gaming or fast content navigation.

Brightness tops out at 500 nits, which is well above the typical 250-300 nits you find in most portable monitors. The 1200:1 contrast ratio and 100% sRGB coverage round out what should be a punchy and accurate display. Ugreen also touts 10-bit color via 8-bit + FRC and factory calibration with a Delta E below 2, which is decent for creators. TÜV Rheinland’s low blue light certification is a nice touch for long sessions.

Design That’s Slim but Not Standalone

The AP16 weighs under 1kg and measures just 6.5mm thick thanks to its metal unibody construction. That makes it easy to toss in a backpack alongside a laptop. But Ugreen skips the usual folding kickstand. Instead, it ships with a magnetic stand that supports both landscape and portrait modes with tilt adjustments. This setup feels more desktop-like and ergonomic than flimsy folio covers, but it’s an extra piece to carry.

Ports and Compatibility: Broad, Yet Expected

Connectivity includes two full-function USB-C ports and a Mini HDMI. Both USB-C ports support pass-through charging to connected devices, with up to 60W charging available when the monitor is plugged into an external power source. This means you can keep a laptop charged while using the AP16 as a secondary screen. The monitor supports a wide range of devices: MacBooks, Windows laptops, iPads, recent iPhones, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and handheld gaming devices from Asus and Lenovo. Dual stereo speakers are included but don’t expect much beyond basic audio playback.

Price Tag That Complicates the Pitch

The AP16’s pricing is where things get tricky. It launches in China at about 1,799 CNY (roughly $270), which is fair for a 16-inch 165Hz portable IPS monitor with these specs. However, international buyers face a hefty markup on AliExpress, where the price jumps to around $490. That’s a big leap, and it pits the AP16 against more established brands and even some budget laptops with built-in displays.

GizmoIndo’s Take

The Ugreen AP16 is an ambitious attempt to pack flagship display features into a portable form factor. The 16:10 aspect ratio, high resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, and 500 nits brightness put it ahead of many rivals. But the devil’s in the details: the lack of an integrated stand, the extra bulk of a magnetic stand, and especially the inflated international price make it a harder sell.

For users in China, $270 for these specs is competitive—if you can handle the extra accessory and limited audio. But paying nearly $500 elsewhere for a portable monitor means you’re better off considering other options, like premium Lenovo or Asus models, or even a secondary laptop with a bigger screen.

In the end, the AP16 is a strong spec sheet on paper but a mixed bag in practice. The market for portable monitors is growing, but Ugreen’s pricing and accessory approach hold it back from being a clear winner. Don’t hold your breath for a flawless experience—real-world use will reveal whether those spec boosts translate into meaningful productivity or gaming gains.
