Panasonic Lumix L10 compact camera with large sensor and OLED viewfinder

Panasonic has introduced the Lumix L10, a compact camera designed to compete directly with Leica’s D-Lux 8 by combining a large sensor and advanced features like an OLED viewfinder.

Panasonic Lumix L10 Brings Sensor and Lens Upgrades

The Lumix L10 marks Panasonic’s return to the compact large-sensor camera segment after eight years, celebrating 25 years of the Lumix brand. It uses a new 26.5-megapixel FourThirds sensor, although the camera effectively crops this to a maximum resolution of 20.4 megapixels depending on the chosen aspect ratio. Photographers can quickly switch between 3:2, 4:3, and 16:9 formats using a dial on the Leica DC Vario-Summilux zoom lens, which covers a 24 – 75 mm equivalent focal length with a bright aperture range of f/1.7 to f/2.8.

OLED Viewfinder and Display Enhance User Experience

In a notable design choice, Panasonic has adopted the D-Lux 8’s electronic OLED viewfinder featuring 2.36 million pixels, delivering sharp and clear framing. The 3-inch rear display also matches Leica’s with 1.84 million pixels, providing excellent clarity for reviewing shots and navigating menus. Performance and Build: A Step Ahead

Weighing 508 grams, the Lumix L10 is heavier than the Leica D-Lux 8 but justifies this with a high-quality metal body and improved performance. The camera can shoot up to 30 frames per second, nearly tripling the D-Lux 8’s 11 fps burst speed. Autofocus capabilities see a massive upgrade as well, with 779 autofocus points compared to the Leica’s 49, promising faster and more precise focusing in varied shooting scenarios.

Pricing and Availability

The Lumix L10 (model DC-L10E) will be available starting June in silver or black for $1,499. A Titanium Gold Limited Edition will be released in July, priced at $1,599. Interestingly, this positions the Lumix L10 above Panasonic’s own full-frame Lumix S9 with a kit lens, which retails for around $1,399.

With its blend of a cutting-edge large sensor, fast zoom lens, and advanced autofocus system, the Panasonic Lumix L10 offers a fresh option for photographers seeking a compact camera with professional features, directly challenging the long-standing Leica D-Lux 8.
