If you have been holding on to your Nintendo 3DS XL or New 3DS and want to give it a fresh, stylish upgrade, the wait is finally over. Clear shell kits that are fully functional and publicly available for these Nintendo handhelds have been launched, allowing gamers to see the inner workings of their consoles like never before.

Clear Shell Kits for Nintendo 3DS XL and New 3DS

The collaboration between KendyLabs and Raretro Consoles has produced KLRR, a retro project designed to deliver transparent replacement housings for both the Nintendo 3DS XL and New 3DS. This initiative addresses a long-standing demand in the handheld modding community for clear, fully assembled shell kits.

Addressing a Unique Challenge

While transparent shells have been common for older Nintendo handhelds such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and even the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo 3DS family posed a tougher challenge. Its intricate hinge design, layered assembly, and tight internal tolerances made producing clear shells difficult. KLRR explains, “Transparent shells have long been available for systems such as the Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and the Nintendo Switch, but the 3DS family has remained a much more difficult challenge due to its hinge design, layered assembly, tight tolerances, and complex internal layout.” The project aims to overcome these hurdles with durable, functional clear shells.

Self-Funded Development and Durability Focus

The KLRR team has spent over two years developing these clear shell kits without any crowdfunding support. Every step, from material selection and filament adjustments to hinge durability and real-world assembly testing, was self-financed to ensure the shells can endure daily use just like the original Nintendo 3DS parts.

Installation and Pricing Considerations

The clear shell kits are rumored to be priced around $100 for the 3DS XL and possibly up to $170 for the New 3DS, reflecting the complexity of the latter’s design. Installing these kits requires significant technical skill and care, as improper assembly could damage the device.

For retro gaming enthusiasts and collectors, this offers a unique opportunity to customize and refresh their devices with a visually striking, transparent look while preserving functionality.
