Following the rollout of security update KB5002914 during Microsoft's September Patch Tuesday cycle, multiple perpetual editions of Microsoft Excel have begun refusing standard paste operations without displaying any warning or error message.
When affected users attempt to copy data and paste it into a new cell, nothing happens. The destination cell remains completely empty while the source cell stays highlighted with dashed borders. Without a sound alert or dialogue box to signal a malfunction, users are left wondering whether their keyboard failed or their system froze.
Silent Failures Spread Across Perpetual Excel Builds
Microsoft officially acknowledged the bug in an update note, confirming that paste commands may fail silently across Excel 2016, Excel 2019, Excel 2021, and Excel 2024. Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) corporate deployments and standalone retail installations running via Click-to-Run or traditional MSI packages are directly impacted.
Interestingly, cloud subscribers using Microsoft 365 Apps appear largely spared from the disruption. Isolated administrative reports noted minor clipboard anomalies on specific business builds, but standard copy-paste operations continue to function properly for most subscription users across Current and Enterprise update rings.
Broken Fill Handles and Stalled Macro Workflows
The glitch reaches deeper into Excel's core mechanics than simple keyboard shortcuts. Office administrators and power users report that the familiar fill handle, used to drag formulas down columns, no longer responds properly. In addition, duplicating full worksheets within a workbook stalls indefinitely or triggers memory access violations such as error code 0xc0000005.
Automated enterprise workflows have also taken a hit. Several users managing financial and data pipelines on Reddit and dedicated admin forums confirmed that Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros stopped executing properly post-patch. In many office environments, these automated scripts handle hours of manual data entry every morning, forcing teams to pause operations until workarounds can be applied.
