Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphone damaged after explosion causing burns

A Samsung Galaxy S24 suddenly exploded in a user’s hand in South Korea, causing minor burn injuries. The incident happened without any apparent cause, and an investigation is now underway.

Unexpected Explosion of Galaxy S24

The user, who purchased the Galaxy S24 through Samsung Partners in South Korea on June 11, 2024, reported that the phone had no prior damage, was never opened, and was not charging at the time. According to the user’s account shared on Reddit’s r/samsunggalaxy subreddit, the device began emitting smoke before the lower part burst open with a loud popping sound.

The phone then jumped upward, striking near the user’s chin before falling to the floor. The fire department later confirmed the incident was consistent with a lithium battery ignition. The user suffered minor burn blisters as the event unfolded too quickly to safely discard the phone. Related coverage: Amazfit Balance 2 Update Enhances User Experience.

Samsung Responds, Investigation Ongoing

A local Samsung service center has since contacted the user and is expected to collect the device for further examination. The user has not requested compensation but has urged Samsung to acknowledge the seriousness of the incident and respond transparently.

Samsung has yet to release any official statement regarding the cause of the explosion. The investigation aims to determine what triggered the sudden ignition of the Galaxy S24’s battery under normal conditions.

Past Incidents Highlight Ongoing Safety Concerns

This is not the first time Samsung has faced reports of phone explosions. In October last year, a Galaxy S25 Plus overheated during typical use, eventually bursting into flames. That same month, a Pixel 10 Pro Fold also exploded during a durability test.

These incidents raise ongoing safety questions about lithium-ion batteries in smartphones, especially when devices catch fire unexpectedly without external damage or misuse.

As investigations continue, users are reminded to handle devices with care and report any unusual heat or smoke immediately. We will update as more information becomes available following Samsung’s official findings.
