Galaxy S24 Explosion Causes Burns, Investigation Underway
A Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphone reportedly exploded in a user’s hand in South Korea, causing minor burn injuries. The incident remains unexplained as Samsung continues its investigation into the sudden fire.
The user, identified on Reddit as ‘chocho-789’, shared photos of the device engulfed in flames and the severe damage afterward. According to the report, the Galaxy S24 was purchased from an official Samsung Partner in South Korea on June 11, 2024, and had no prior damage or modifications.
Unexpected Fire While Phone Was in Use
The explosion occurred as the phone was held normally—not charging or subjected to drops. The user described smoke emerging from the device before the lower section burst open with a loud pop. The phone then propelled upward, striking near the user’s chin before falling to the floor. Related coverage: Flagship iQoo Tablet with 4K Display and iQoo 15T.
The local fire department confirmed the incident was consistent with a lithium battery ignition, a known risk with smartphone batteries. The user sustained minor burn blisters during the rapid event.
Samsung Responds, Device to Be Investigated
Following the incident, a nearby Samsung service center contacted the user and plans to collect the damaged phone for a detailed examination. The user has not requested compensation but emphasized the need for Samsung to acknowledge the gravity of the event and respond transparently.
Context: Previous Samsung and Other Phone Incidents
This is not the first time a Samsung device has experienced a battery fire. In October of the previous year, a Galaxy S25 Plus reportedly overheated, producing smoke and popping sounds before igniting after falling to the ground.
Similar incidents have affected other brands, such as a Pixel 10 Pro Fold exploding during a durability test. These events highlight ongoing concerns about lithium battery safety in mobile devices.
What This Means for Galaxy S24 Users
While such incidents are rare, they underscore the importance of monitoring device temperature and handling smartphones carefully. Samsung’s investigation may reveal more about the cause and help prevent future occurrences.
Users are advised to follow official guidelines for device use and report any unusual behavior to service centers promptly.
