Google Gemini Intelligence AI automating tasks on Android phone

Google has introduced Gemini Intelligence Android, a new AI-driven platform designed to turn Android devices into proactive agents that handle everyday tasks. This innovation aims to reduce the manual effort users spend on routine activities by enabling their phones to automate actions such as booking workout classes or placing grocery orders.

Android AI automation with Gemini Intelligence

The core advancement with Gemini Intelligence is its app automation capability. Rather than simply responding to voice or text queries, Gemini can navigate apps and perform multi-step tasks on the user’s behalf. For example, users can long-press the power button while viewing a screenshot of a grocery list, prompting Gemini to compile the shopping cart automatically. Progress is tracked via notifications, and the user only needs to confirm the final purchase.

Expanding AI features across devices

The rollout begins this summer with the Samsung Galaxy S26 and Google Pixel 10, and will later extend to a broader range of Android phones, smartwatches, and laptops. This phased release ensures early access to flagship devices followed by wider availability. Related coverage: Google Introduces Android-Powered Googlebook Laptops with Gemini AI.

Enhancements to browsing, typing, and widgets

Alongside automation, Google is upgrading browsing and input tools with AI:

  • Chrome’s Auto Browse: Arriving in late June for Chrome on Android, this feature assists users with routine online tasks like reserving parking spots.
  • Improved Autofill: Android’s Autofill will leverage contextual data from apps to complete complex forms more efficiently, saving users from excessive typing.
  • Gboard Rambler: This new voice dictation feature cleans up filler words, pauses, and language switches, delivering clearer text messages from spoken input.
  • Text-to-widget: Users can create custom home screen widgets by typing prompts such as weekly recipe lists or wind speed displays, with Android generating the widget automatically.

Privacy and transparency built in

Given the sensitive nature of granting AI access to screen content and apps, Google is making these features strictly opt-in. The company states that data processing happens in secure environments. Additionally, an upcoming update to the Android Privacy Dashboard will allow users to track exactly which apps the AI has interacted with in the past 24 hours.

To maintain transparency, any background activity by the assistant will be indicated by a persistent notification at the top of the screen, which users cannot dismiss. This ensures users are always aware when AI automation is active.

Google’s Gemini Intelligence promises to reshape how Android users interact with their devices by making AI-powered automation more integrated, helpful, and secure.
