Anthropic has officially updated its AI workspace structure, consolidating Claude Cowork and standard chat into a single unified interface. Previously, users were required to decide whether a project belonged in a basic conversational window or a dedicated Cowork environment before sending a prompt. Under the new unified workflow, users simply describe their target outcome, leaving Claude to automatically select the necessary background execution routines, web lookups, or file-handling capabilities.
The change is rolling out gradually to paid Pro and Max subscribers across web, desktop, and mobile platforms, with Team and Enterprise tiers set to transition later. Alongside the unified interface, Anthropic is embedding built-in document editing and presentation tools directly into normal chat threads. However, once an account receives the migration, the change is permanent, bringing both streamlined automation and notable workflow adjustments to daily AI usage.
How the Unified Interface Dynamically Executes Tasks
By erasing the barrier between basic chat and task execution, Anthropic shifts how users interact with its models. Rather than switching modes to trigger multi-step workflows, any chat window can now initiate complex background tasks. If a prompt requires compiling a detailed research report, Claude initiates background processing that continues running in the cloud even if the user closes their browser or shuts down their laptop.
This automatic tool selection also changes traditional UI elements. The explicit web search toggle has been removed, replaced by an automated decision system where Claude determines when external web data is required. Existing chats, projects, connectors, and custom skills automatically transition into the new unified space, while older Cowork tasks remain accessible within recent history.
Built-In Collaboration: Claude Docs and Claude Slides Arrive
Alongside the unified workspace, Anthropic introduced two new productivity tools alongside the integration of Claude Design, which debuted earlier this year:
• Claude Docs: Enables real-time document co-authoring directly within conversations, featuring inline commentary, collaborative editing, and shareable link management.
• Claude Slides: Generates presentation decks directly inside the chat interface, allowing inline revisions, direct presentation playback, or exports to PowerPoint (.pptx) and PDF formats.
• Claude Design: Now operates directly inside standard conversation threads, allowing visual artifact generation without opening a standalone studio tool.
All three tools are currently offered in beta for paid tier accounts, though enterprise administrators retain centralized controls to decide when these surfaces become accessible to internal teams.
Permission Controls and Technical Trade-offs
To balance automation with user oversight, Anthropic implemented granular permission controls inside the message box. By default, accounts are set to Manual mode, requiring users to review and approve each action before Claude edits files, executes code, or sends external communications. Users can switch to Auto mode, which allows Claude to work autonomously while running automated safety checks prior to executing operations. Regardless of the chosen setting, Claude explicitly prompts for user confirmation before permanently deleting any stored file.
Despite the workflow consolidation, the update introduces several temporary operational limitations. Adding direct content from GitHub repositories is currently unssupported in the new UI, and branching conversations from previous message nodes is disabled. Furthermore, incognito chat sessions revert to the legacy interface, preventing them from generating files or running local code blocks. Usage limits are also metered differently during the transition, as long-running multi-tool tasks consume quota faster than routine Q&A prompts.
Availability and Tiered Migration Schedule
Anthropic is deploying the update in stages. Pro and Max subscribers will see the unified layout appear automatically, with no manual toggle available to revert to the old separated interface. Team and Free tier accounts will receive the update in subsequent rollout phases, while Enterprise administrators will receive a mandatory 30-day advance notice before any organizational workflow changes take effect.
